CIGARETTES AND COFFEE: an affair
2/18/2025
I wrote this in February of this year but never posted it. Til now. Because it had marinated in time. Did you know some poetry is like fine wine? Not saying this poem is that good but time adds perspective.
When I wrote it, I didn't feel it. Do you know what I mean? The poets do. As I was looking to post a new poem I had written, I scanned the past ones I had from this year, and this just felt so good.
Even to me, sometimes when I write, I don't get it and sometimes I forget I don't need to. I just need to feel it. I hope you feel this...in whatever way you wish.
.........................................................................................................................
The sun shines brightly
At a slant
Giving its heat to the other side of this tilted Earth.
_Still_
Time passes
And our turn will come
With a cigarette dangling from lip..
Or nicotined fingers,
We look cool.
It helps the time pass
By cutting our life short.
A devil's bargain..Truth be told
But the body craves its sins,
As the mind justifies the reality...
Let me give you a coffee
..to warm your soul...
From the bitter cold.
A smaller sin,
to whittle the stillness of time.
We are always rushing,
Speeding..
Full steam ahead!
As if our home will be gone if it takes an extry 5 minutes to get there!
Quick!
Another beer before closing time..
Chug it down!
Cigarettes and coffee..
One's a pleasure..
the other a sin..
But it depends on the slant of the sun..
or ones view:
The cigarette an affair of the lungs,
Cheating on the heart.
The coffee..
the enabler.
Perspectives are such strange creatures.
I've tamed the enabler,
still drink coffee..but..
No more affairs..
of the carnal..
Only in past lives.
Coffee or tea?
Sip..
Either way..
Make the moments last
No regrets

Your poem is as good as ‘Coffee & Cigarettes’ by Jim Jarmusch. Will probably never get old. Thanks for sharing!
