Cheers with a Broken Glass

all in the title...

By Markus ShieldsPublished 4 years ago 1 min read

Cheers to cloudy days

To starless nights, also sleepless

Cheers to rain without a bow

To songbirds that tarry peep-less

Cheers to flowers, forever buds

That sprout yet never bloom

Honey-less hives and butterflies

Trapped in their cocoons

Cheers to branches bare

To burning bushes and holey shrubs

To leafless trees, to browning grass

And seeds planted in the mud

Cheers to rivers dried

To waveless oceans and empty seas

To still waters, idle sailboats

And beaches absent of the breeze

Cheers to the sky

Whose sun sets with but one hue

A sun never to rise again

To begin the day anew

Raise your glass to reaching the mountaintop

But to gaze without a view

Now raise your glass one higher

Cheers to me without you

Cheers to lonely sheets

An empty bed, a silent room

Cheers to headless pillows

Watching the dark side of the moon

Cheers to empty arms

Dry lips and tongues behaved

Cheers to photos captured

Without you, no need to save

Cheers to calls unanswered

And letters never mailed

Stories never told

And fairy-less fairytales

Cheers to a life unworthy of living

Thoughtless mind, worthless cares

Deflated aspirations

Heads bowing to faithless prayers

Cheers to a bloodless lamb

To a church without a choir

To Heaven with no angels

And to Hell without a fire

Raise a final cup

To a eulogy read to empty pews

Proclamations of my beat-less heart

For I am dead without you
