“I used to be Snow White, but I drifted.” -- Mae West

The quest for purity is folly pure

We are born wailing in blood and feces

For being human, there is no real cure

From an emperor’s fart to a nun’s sneeze

The evidence of imperfection flows

The innocent heart is oblivious

The clean mind, absolutely nothing knows

Naïve tongues make their folly obvious

If all who are impure must be condemned

Then not a soul will escape destruction

Inquisitors’ robes may be brightly gemmed

But their hidden stains supply instruction

Sneering castigation of the impure

For hypocrites, has beguiling allure

Sonnet
