Can I be honest?

I mean, really, can I?

To whom it may concern,

We've lost the ability

to be honest;

we've traded in our integrity

for awareness and empathy.

By we, I mean my ego and I.

The ability to truly bond

with another soul

is like a deep dive,

into an underground cave.

That cave

is the connection

between you an I;

a pocket of safety

where I come up for some air;

where I can be honest.

Since I've lost the ability

to be honest,

I've become alone

here in this world;

day 2,939.

There is no pocket of safety

where I can come up for air,

so I've adopted the ability

to breathe underwater;

to exist in a state of despair

and having the audacity

to call it

"perpetual dark night of the soul".

Sincerely,

honesty feels like eating glass
