Playing Pretend

Original artwork-Wynter Rhoads

The blade hesitates to cut the skin

the r o p e slides from the tree

I struggle with the safety pin

So I settle for a drink

The hint of b u z z excites me

not much further till I find

That place of numbing clarity

a quick escape out of my mind

Where nothing and no one matters

just loud music and spinning rooms

Forget that my life’s in tatters

Where I’m not c r a v i n g toxic fumes

I try my best to keep things hidden

Smile and act like its okay

When something out of nowhere

Makes me need to guard the things I say

Don’t know why it always happens

guess it’s just how it’s gonna be

I struggle just to understand

why it’s so damn hard to just love me

Sending you hugs. Thank you for this vulnerable piece. It's beautifully written, albeit, sad. Well done, Kelli.
