Cafes
Noticing the lives of others, but mostly yours
Why have a café?
The constant hum of the coffee machine in your ear, why is that noise endearing to me whilst I sit here?
Maybe for the buzz of it matching the visitors squeals,
maybe the smiles you exchange as they “umm” and “ahh” over the contemplation of which slice of cake,
maybe the questions of “what would you choose?”, “what is your favourite?” from the elderly gentleman on a Sunday morning,
maybe its bresthing in freshly roasted coffee beansall day, the sound of conversations from all walks of life, the laughter, the sadness, the silence that is all shared,
Opening a café is so much more than coffee,
So much more than cake and money and business,
It’s creating a moment of sheer happiness, of comfort, of safeness,
For those that visit, once or on a weekly basis, it is a luxury you get to provide, it’s a slither of time with strangers in their busy schedule, it’s a chance to make someone beam with happiness.
It’s a café vibe, the welcoming atmosphere, the good background hum and company of others, the little cheeky grins to small children, as they pop sticky fingers on windows and drop crumbs under their chairs.
It’s life, pure life, all in four walls of public space.
