River Joy, 'First Frost' 2023
sharp and fresh
stirring my warm body
from the dullness
of a late fall slumber
it lasts so long these days
damp and dreary
when the crunch of the leaves
turns to the crunch of ice
and the fiery red leaves of fall
tumble slowly
into the subdued white
wings of change
it is time to slow,
to take shelter from
The storm.
your blood runs thicker
in the winter
hardening you for
freezing
everyday landscapes
unfurling into tiny fractal miracles
magic
settles like
a cold blanket
of shimmering dust
preparing the earth
for sleep
and me
for whatever
comes
next.

Your words are so good, it's like they paint a picture. Excellent work.
So good. Love the imagery here, and the line about slowing down, sheltering, and blood running thicker in the winter.
The aesthetics of your poetry and the words chosen are truly wonderful, creating visuals of winter's glow. Well done.
