Burnt

And Burned

The society we have created,

Burns candles at both ends.

You can hear about all your short falls,

From someone you called friend.

It doesn't matter if you've always been there,

At great cost to yourself.

It doesn't matter if you were the only one,

Hand out to offer help.

Some people will only see trees,

While you're busy making a path.

You stop a moment to catch your breath,

And hear all about what you lack.

I've gone forward completely unaided,

I've walked along while you drove.

I've cut trees, and froze to death,

Just to fill your old wood stove.

Still, it's easy to point and laugh,

Look how much further you've gone.

I'm tempted to sit, stop, protest.

What will you do without your pawn?

You will find another, and I

Will continue on my quest.

Still, I move much slower now.

I've burned up all my best.
