They said prohibition would reduce corruption, impact crime. Johnny proved them wrong. It was corn, sugar, and yesterday’s potatoes. Common items, everyone had them. Sarah couldn’t take a bath without smelling like the juniper he used to make it drinkable.

She opened the window, looking out on the rickety fire escape. Scattering corn across the sill she waited, silently, so the pigeons would come to be fed.

Johnny would be making his last pickup now.

Sarah smiled at the pretty speckled one, feeling the bruise across her cheek tighten.

He wouldn’t need the corn anymore, and she wanted a bath.
