The bluest of eyes that sought
her first familiar faces
hands to cradle and hold
as Mommy’s milk
washed over the day
The bluest of eyes that saw
brown teddy bears, orange tabbies,
and dalmatian puppies
a world where friends looked alike
and shared the same smile
The bluest of eyes that observed
the shades of intolerance
as our role models
hid the brown and yellow crayons
and broke our young hearts
The bluest of eyes that saw
our reflections through
a cracked lens
where shapes were blurred
and colors bled
The bluest of eyes that wept
for the senseless pain
inflicted on our children
A society held hostage
in a room void of light
The bluest of eyes that dreamt
of hummingbirds and butterflies
among double rainbows
where strangers hold hands
and chant “love is love”
My bluest of eyes that peek
though the veil of possibility
where colors shine through
and blossom on the dawn
of a new horizon
