I hated the moments

When I saw madness in his eyes

>

Typically rare

Always terrifying

>

Bright, gleaming lightning

Streaming from a pale youthful face

>

I never knew

If it was my madness or his own

>

Or inherited from elsewhere

>

There was plenty to go around

>

I had spent years helping him

Knowing what it was like

To fight that demon

>

Armed with years

Of therapy and reflection

>

I knew the demon

I knew many demons

>

But what terrified me most

Was that I was looking at pain

>

The thought terrifies me still
