Blackberries

sweet tea memory

Summer so sweet like the juice of the peach,

On bales of hay high, the ground just out of reach.

Once upon a time, pre-desolation

As surety to my soul before reincarnation.

Picking fruit, playing games in the truck bed

Some days this replays like a loop in my head

Purple berries stained our fingers and lips,

Two small girls with baskets on their hips.

A sunshine dance divine, the most innocent play

In the before times, with no bounty to pay

Simplicity’s embrace around those who we love

Protected by the sunflowers like gods above

Bonnets on heads peering into the pond

Bluebottles whizzing, swatted at with a frond.

Is Destiny so jumbled that it has no cause?

The roots of our future, the lilacs applause

Seeds of the raspberry, float in our tea

Roll down grass covered hills with laughter and glee.

Eyes like a burm, the others like ice,

Hearts like a campfire, feet pounding twice

Priceless freedom of childhood, their souls like a kite

Entranced in the beauty of their growing might.
