Bittersweet Distance
The pain of distance - how it it is necessary, yet oh so painful.
With every word spoken,
Every word gone unsaid-
The space between us grows,
Thickens, warps, changes us.
Borne out of necessity,
An unrelenting need
Of self-preservation-
'Tis time for growth.
Change is afoot,
Ever present in the air
Of the distance between us
And unspoken words.
I know now what I need,
That this distance is necessary-
But oh, how it hurts,
Seeing how our words are now.
But 'tis time to allow for
This growing distance between us,
For I must put myself first,
And accept we're all adults.
We make our own choices,
And I cannot influence yours.
If I cannot abide by what you do,
Then I must allow this growing distance.
Allow the pain, the grief of what was-
To wash over me, to bathe me
In its what ifs, fears, memories, anxieties
Only to be dried away on a gentle wind.
'Tis time to allow for the
Possibilities of the future-
A future that, perhaps,
No longer involves my past.
I must stand up for myself,
Tie up loose ends, deny censorship,
Borne from the fear of hurting others-
Time to start speaking my truth.
Time to stop wishing and hoping
On a long dead star-
Time to start living, without
The haunting ghosts of my past.
So with this, I allow
Possibilities abound!
And with this I allow
The possibilities of endings.
Bittersweet goodbyes,
Murmured through the breeze,
Whispering it's farewells
Into the forevermore.
