Ever since I was told
I felt a vague emptiness
A nagging, gnawing longing
Why was I left in the cold?
**********
My life has been good
Raised by loving parents
Treated with affection and fairness
From toddler to adulthood
**********
Yet now I know the truth
How I was l abandoned as a babe
Left at a fire station
By an anonymous youth
**********
So now I hunt and peck
Searching from site to page
Looking for a hint … a reason
It’s making me a wreck
**********
Day after day for weeks on end
I searched papers and web
Until the day I found her
When to a story my hunt did wend
**********
My adoptive parents were hurt
But they tried to be supportive
Had they told me years back
Perhaps I wouldn’t have been so curt
**********
I wanted to meet her …
Reluctantly she agreed
She only wanted money
Her face a teary blur
**********
I asked her why
She only shrugged
Saying she was a child herself
Then she let out a sigh
**********
I gave her a twenty for food
Left feeling unsatisfied, angry
But my parents gave me a hug
Welcoming me back to the brood
**********
My months long hunt has ended
Not sorry I embarked on the quest
But sometimes I still wonder
Where her addictive path wended
