Between the Lines of Goodbye

A whisper of joy entangled with pain

By Raymond BentumPublished about a year ago 1 min read

In the pause between words, a universe lay,

A silence that echoed what we couldn’t say.

Eyes met briefly, then turned aside,

Holding the weight of the love denied.

The air grew heavy with unspoken care,

A fragile thread stretched thin and bare.

Your hand brushed mine, a fleeting embrace,

A moment etched, then lost in space.

Each breath we took was a fleeting refrain,

A melody sung in the language of pain.

Not anger, not sorrow, but something in-between,

A bittersweet ache in a realm unseen.

The door stood open, the world called your name,

Yet still, I stood rooted, unchanged, the same.

Not for lack of courage, but fear of the void,

The space where your presence had once been deployed.

Goodbye lingered, a shadowed refrain,

A whisper of joy entangled with pain.

Between the lines of what wasn’t revealed,

Lay truths too tender to ever be healed.

As footsteps faded, a tear found its place,

Tracing the lines of love’s fleeting grace.

And though we parted, one truth did remain—

Farewells may end, but the heart retains.
