Lantern Light

When the sun has gone to rest,

And the moon has yet to lay its claim,

Darkness creeps around a lonely home.

Until a single lantern stakes its domain.

-

The light stands guard over a slumbering house,

As shadows dance across the lawn

And critters dart from here to there,

Careful not to linger long.

-

Perhaps evil spirits are kept at bay,

Or maybe a weary traveler finds his way,

A welcoming embrace or an invisible shield,

Multiple roles this lantern must play.

-

A yellow tunnel through the night,

A path, a road, a bridge of light.

When the sun has its final say,

The lantern carries light to break of day.
