Better on Paper

Confessions of a Poet

By John PrestonPublished 7 years ago 1 min read

All my efforts crumble at

The touch of my hand,

Everything I've ever set

My mind to has

Failed within my sight but

My words have stuck with me.

I’m better on paper than what I could

Ever speak, for my words are spoken

Onto paper.

You can’t begin to imagine what

It’s taken to get this far, I do not quit and

I do not give up in quick time.

But instead I push on because the power

Is not in spoken words.

I’m better on paper than what I could

Ever speak, for my words are spoken

Onto paper.

Every stone I could ever walk upon

Leaves a mark from my tread.

As I tread carefully upon every decision

I have had to make. As my ability keeps

on shining like a light, it has submerged me

Like water all within my mind.

I’m better on paper than what I could

Ever speak, for my words are spoken

Onto paper.

When I’m dead you’ll read the best of me,

In a land that came before me and might

End after me. It’s these words which might

Remain forever cherished by a nation which

Failed to acknowledge me.

I’m better on paper than what I could

Ever speak, for my words are spoken

Onto paper.
