Belly of a Beast

a Queen of the Gulls poem

I know too much about heartache

and not enough about miracles.

Strangely, I am engulfed

by the titanic mouth

older than this realm,

and I find myself

somewhere

in the darkness

of a belly that has

known too much hunger

and not enough love.

And I am not sorry

because so long

as I have a heart

to beat and ache,

I will spit fire

for my beloved.

So, I will claw and kick

like eagles battling

mid-flight,

until I am unsettled,

sent skyward

through salt spray,

diving into the tenebrosity

of a Sea

who has known

too much emptiness

and not enough warmth.

And when the lone sailor,

named after intrepid winds,

returns from his search

empty handed,

he will hold mine instead,

rescue me from the ravenous

currents,

and take me to the isle

of the patient cast-away.

For his kindness,

I will pay him

in sand dollars and stories

of a siren

whose name

echoes in my dreams.

Hauntingly beautiful, the sea imagery and emotional depth pulled me right in. Congrats on Top Story.

I love how the poem balances vulnerability and fierce strength. The speaker’s resolve to “spit fire for my beloved” is both passionate and empowering.
