Before you said hello

A poem in your accent

Before you said hello

I heard the song of your sure footsteps

Bellied and rumbling like samba music

2 deep breaths to my left.

I saw you and lost syntax

So my smile danced before you said excuse me.

All clumsy finding rhythm only in your eyes.

I felt the hug of your hello before you extended your hand.

Smelled how sweet your drawl would be.

Crawling like honey and drank like sweet tea,

I love sweet tea.

Southern and full of home

And that was it.

That's all it took.

You had me before hello,

Now I would spend forever loved in the way your consonants

Break my night.

And I just might

I just might

Because I love the way you accent me.
