Before You

a love poem

Before you, I only knew what I didn't want

listed the things I couldn't do again

walked away with ease

picked up on a tone or phrase or one slightly dismissive shrug, and I was out,

an interruption at the wrong time was an ending, not a pause,

but everything you do is a realization

this is all I've ever wanted.

If this is love, I have never loved before

all I've done is play pretend

hoping, wishing, waiting for you to come along and show me

what it is to be seen and understood

free of doubt or daydreams of what I might be missing out on.

I'll divide it all up telling stories someday

this or that was Before You,

and everything good came after.

"If this is love, I have never loved before all I've done is play pretend" Is so powerful! And that ending is so tenderly beautiful.
