Beauty Is Not An Idea

Beauty is not an idea

A competition

A political agenda

Or a social grenade

Confidence is not the same

As being cocky

It’s not offensive

Every body is beautiful and

Handsome alike

The used

The abused

The scarred

The broken

The scale cannot and

Will not decide that

For you

For us

We do not bend to

To social idea of beauty

We do not change who we are

To feel accepted

When in reality

We should be accepted

For who we are

For who we want to be

Stop trying to cover us up

When we speak out against

The toxicity of social standards

Stop trying to cover up who we are

And smother us

With your fear

With your ideas

We are not our social standards

Stop trying to fit us in categories

Under labels

Like our worth

Is based upon

The color of our skin

Or how much we weigh

We are more then your ideas

Then your fears

We cannot be contained

And our voices

Cannot be shut out.

SPEAK UP AGAINST FORCED SOCIAL STANDARDS!

As a teen writing in an adult world, I’ve made it my goal to bring in a new youthful perspective, awareness on a variety of serious topics and issues we face, to light in my free verse poems.

Because if we have a voice, we should use it.
