Back Then

a poem

Back then, I kept job alerts set for Ohio

emails with new listings in my industry sent right to my inbox so we could move home

late nights scouring job descriptions for salaries and minimum requirements,

searching the distance between cities and towns and our old stomping grounds,

I was ready to walk away from all of this

pack up our things and settle into something comfortable again

call it a failed experiment,

we took a stepping stone but couldn't make the jump

however you want to put it, I was ready to lie to myself

the city would be too much for us

when it was only too much for you
