Your first breath, my daughter,
Was no delicate flower.
You wailed, and kept at it
For over an hour.
*
After you were cleaned up,
I pulled you up close.
I was sure that my girl
Was the prettiest in the cosmos.
*
Then, you snuggled and you drank
Until you had your fill.
With a burp and a spit up,
You slept perfectly still.
*
And now that you’re
Experiencing motherhood too,
Your own baby’s breaths
Offer wonder anew.
*
This poem is dedicated to all new mothers and fathers, especially single parents struggling to make ends meet for their babies. I honor your efforts.
