Augury

Because you must weather the storm, even as the storm weathers you.

You hold fast within

sediment

meant for me.

//

//

Its serene, the way you teeter,

caressing the cusp of something volatile--

insoluble to my diurnal tides.

//

//

Your sunlight flickers in waves,

//

somehow equally a horrible vestige, a glacier,

a godsend, a flame.

//

My hands reach to you --

a lantern glimmering off droplets

like a thousand small mirrors.

There, amidst turbulent storms,

//

My body plunges.

//

I shake.

//

Quiet. Cold. Afraid.

//

Muscles, mind submerged.

Senses obscured.

//

//

//

//

You do not speak. You--the lamplight,

the twilight beyond. You only

stare at the deluge

slowly rising.

//

//

//

//

I cannot weather

this storm. I cannot lift myself

from shallows. The floodwater splices

skin

//

already skinned.

//

//

//

It dredges body deeper by each wrist.

//

//

//

There is no convalescence--

nothing inside nor beyond these trenches--

nothing but a pelting,

//

pelting,

//

pelting storm.

//

//

//

//

Then, I see it in the gutters:

particles churning

like a light mending -- shadows

bending to your will. It bows

to your feet, quelling

waves as if tides are an entity

meant to obey.

//

I'm desperate

for the tides to obey.

//

//

Its unfair, the way you glow

at my jagged form as I limp towards you

//

like a nightmare...

//

a creature of self-slaughter, self-taught

to ladle sediment into itself

until it is no longer

discernible

amidst the dredges--

a twisted image of limbs distorted

by oceans scrambling

amongst terrible weather--

//

Yet--you, a contronym,

a phantom of both glacier

and flame, extend sunlit hands

and dredge mine

ashore.

//

//

You find me. You,

an augury luminescent. A glimmer

amongst the rain.
