At Days End

Examining the lives we live.

At day's end, do you know what mattered most

At the end of the day, did you deliver that to those who care

A moment walking in the sand along a sandy coast

A chance to do the right thing for those who are always there

--

At day's end, were you exhausted from head to toe

Not having any idea whether you would be there for long

Were you able to show up, to continue to go

Did they all know you were deep in a bottle and a sad cowboy's song

--

How many memories have you forged that you escape to at day's end

Not of things but places and the people who were there

Today might not be the day that ends with you as the consummate friend

But those who know, if you did it all right, won't forget you care

--

At day's end, what matters is our connections in this world so hard

Forget not that life is here to give an easy path to no man

Enjoy a moment's peace watching the kids playing in the yard

The ticking in your head is a part of a grander plan

--

For what is done is done, my worldly traveled mate

You'll see those marks in the mirror at day's end

The marks, lines, and scars that detail your journey to your fate

At day's end, that's a reality that will not bend

--

That's why we lived life on our terms alone

Uncrushed by the wills of greedier, lesser men

Not trapped by the anchors of tech or cell phone

Attuned to those things that were important way back when

--

As day's end comes faster and faster, you feel the change in you

Faces change as they get closer to the end of the day

You smile less, but have so much more you want to do

Time is now the debt that you're getting closer to having to pay

--

When day's end comes, remember doing right by those for whom you cared

Forget those wrongdoers that had to be dealt with because it was right

Remember only of the good moments, laughs, and loves that you shared

And rest easy at day's end as you walk into that one last night

I hope you know that you are worthy of the words you have written here, my friend. I have come to know you well enough to know that even when we disagree you are always seeking out that which is right & that your heart is ever true. For this..., for you, I shall always be grateful.
