Ashes to Ashes

The Last Flame Challenge

By Michelle NPublished about a month ago Updated about a month ago 1 min read

I still remember when you said hi

So many sparks in a blazing radiance

Us coming together was instantaneous

Just like moths drawn to a flame

*

I still remember when we faced the world

Every game played like it was kindling

Every secret told nourished a new ember

Every moment shared was the draft it drew

*

I still remember it like it was yesterday

When we said, this flame would never die

Friends forever, give or take

The inferno that no one else can quench

*

I remember when i saw you

Talking about life and how stifled you were

The glimmer in your eyes growing dim

Still present, but like dying coal.

*

You remembered my birthday

Received a text of a cake with a lit candle

All our moments flickered by

I blew a breath, and the small flame died

Author's note: This is about friendship in our heyday, getting stifled over the pressures of life.
