As For Me
For this time and for this day, you and I were born,
And unlike many, I’m grateful and not forlorn.
For be it far better to be free upon this land,
Than to have been forced into subjugation by another’s plan.
Even though we still bicker, argue, and complain,
We should be grateful it hasn’t always remained the same.
But over time and through prayerful commitment,
We’ve evolved to some degree from a nation of resentment.
Flags unfurled on neighborhood porches,
Speak of a tradition by those who would’ve burned torches.
Are we proud of this nation we’ve become,
A nation trying to be united, but still fractured by some.
Is it opinions that separate us, these differences they make,
That keeps us from understanding, it’s for our own sake?
We can respect the differences that keep us apart,
And still, join hands to celebrate Liberty’s spark.
For me, my services, and my family, those that are left,
I’ll continue to salute the flag no matter my distress.
For it was this flag and for which it stands,
Life, liberty, and faithfulness it will always command.
