I’ve asked myself for a long time now,
Am I the reflection, or the person looking into the mirror?
A planet, or the sun it circles.
Do I orbit, or do I anchor?
-
My counterpart certainly has a talent,
For drawing me into more collisions,
I must be a planet then,
The refection of someone else.
-
Am I the same though?
Or a product of their behaviour?
Would I continue this cycle of destruction,
If I were left alone?
-
Am I really the type to hold someone,
Underwater, until the thrashing stops,
Only to curse their corpse,
For getting my arms wet?
-
I think I know, deep down,
That I am.
Not for gratification, not that,
But for revenge – yes.
-
The thought makes me sick,
To use my strength to push someone down,
And cursing them just as venomously,
Think of that.
-
My reflection would warp anew,
The mirror would shatter,
And I would seize control of my own orbit,
Violently.
-
There is no singular event,
That could lead to this,
Only years of kicking aside my spark,
And making me lick the singe from their boots.
-
My mouth is bitter now: leather and dirt,
Just like theirs,
Dripping in thick poison,
Am I just the same?
-
I hope not,
I pray not,
I beg not,
Not a villain, please.
-
Would it be so bad?
If I used my venom just for them?
On my own terms?
To use the shards of the mirror to cut deeper and deeper?
-
On second thoughts,
I’ll swallow the venom down,
And change my reflection little by little,
Until I look like myself in the end,
And the world tastes sweet.
A/N: Hello hello! I am thrilled to announce that some of my shorter pieces here on vocal will now come with an audio recording of me reading them out! I have been getting more and more comfortable with my voice on the internet and now I feel like bringing it to Vocal will enhance some of my poetry. I hope you enjoy!
This poem was written for my writer's club, a twitch stream I host every Thursday at 6pm! Feel free to drop by!

OH, this hits with so much honesty! I really appreciate how openly you explore the pull between who you’ve been shaped to be and who you want to become. The audio is such a greta touch - what an amazing idea! <3
The recording brought more to this poem that was already as deep as the ocean. I think we’ve all had this debate. Very relatable
Thought provoking poem. Like Dharrsheena, I enjoyed your poem’s audio. Great job.
I loveeeeee your recording! I read your poem again while listening to your reading. So beautiful!
