Anywhere is home – by Sydney-Rose Smithson
The soft breeze of the morning air and the sunrise dancing through her hair
It wakes her from her blanket lair, a feat of love, wonder, and care
The rooster crows with waking delight for the moon is set and the sky is bright
Waking with a kiss, a hug; it’s off to work
Buttoning that dusty plaid red shirt
Boots like shining armor-clad, she’s off to make the chickens mad
One egg, two egg, three egg, four... She’s thankful for her morning chore.
A laugh and a giggle as the children play, rolling over each other in the soft fresh hay
Breakfast is served with a bit of laughter, there is much work to do all day after
It’s off to sit at the kitchen table, the school day begins with a few fun fables
One more hug and one more kiss; the farmers are off to complete their daily lists
Milk the cows, groom the horses, the pigs are fed slop in their reinforced fortress
Clouds on the horizon mean good news for the crops, the rain has been scarce and the thunderstorms pop….
Down comes the water and in run the goats, they hate getting wet and it ruins their coats
The farmers secure the greenhouse in a scramble, sometimes storms like this can be a gamble
Done outside the farmers come in for the day, dripping soaked and ready to play
There are still a few things that need to be done, but baking and cooking are still pretty fun
After dinner the children are off to bed, dreams of unicorns and rainbows swimming in their heads
She sits near the fire, her family beside her, to swap stories and funny things that happened before this very hour
They knit and they sew for the next bit of time, but it’s off to sleep early; they can sleep on a dime
Laying back in bed, the day is nearly over, she yawns and rolls a bit closer
Her lover is there with arms open wide; you can hear the wind whipping outside
They all settle in and listen to the storm, but they know they are all safe and warm
Tomorrow this will all start again; the farmers will have a lot to mend
Goodnights are said wherever you roam, but when you live with your family… anywhere is home.
