Anthem of Our Nation

Trust of the citizens lost

Desperation

Seems to be the anthem of our nation

So many in the dark

Seeking to make their mark

Lost in the crowds

The noise of their cries so loud

Everyone fighting

So many dying

When does the injustice end

A nation of darkness we defend

While it crushes us beneath its cogs

Like useless hogs

Disregarded

Broken hearted

Money and power corrupt

Most of us already bankrupt

Paycheck to paycheck

Like a knife constantly cutting into our neck

Suffocating from lack of education

Lower and middle class ripe for the taking

Healthcare system a shame

Only the rich can attain

The American dream

Makes me what to scream

A façade to keep us working

They are the master at diverting

Our attention set on the lie we are sold

Till we get old

No longer useful to the society we forged with our sweat and blood

Left to rot in the mud

Taught to be patient

We sit complacent

Waste our lives away

For companies that could let us go any day

No protection for the working class that drives their commerce

What a shady economy we traverse

Greed and envy the only thing that drives those in charge

The quality of our lives the surcharge

Corporations buying housing

Leaving the working-class drowning

Rent so high

Wages too low to buy

What a mess

12.5% of our country homeless

Children on the streets

Can’t afford to eat

9th richest country on the Earth

But our citizens hold no worth

11.5% of our country living in poverty

Why can’t we take care of them properly?

All the wealth and influence

Where is the balance?

At the grocery store

Prices continue to soar

So many left hungry

Not making enough money

What happened to basic human rights?

No one cares about our plights

Rights taken

Morals forsaken

Democracy a façade

Our people downtrod

The top 1% own 30% of our country’s net worth

While 32.9% of women still die from childbirth

Numbers don’t lie

The facts leave me asking why?

Why is wealth all that matters,

While the rest of us live in tatters

Why does the man asleep in the street,

not deserve something hot to eat?

Why do women who bring forth our next generation,

Lack proper observation?

Why is health care is just another corporation?

Why doesn’t compassion

Have more traction?

Why is it more acceptable to argue about genders,

but do nothing to address the 1000s of other injustices that plague our nations members?

Why do we send aid to every other country,

But run out when our own citizens need money?

These questions plague my mind

The answers hard to find

I can’t be the only one who feels this rage

Like we are all stuck in a cage

Sinking to the bottom

When will our leaders address the real problems

Stop distracting us with politics and lust

Revision is a must

In our nation we cannot trust

Well the statistics I included were from reputable sources. I think the point I made depend on your presepective. What is better you ask? There are plenty of other countries we could look to for input on that questions. No country has succeed in eliminating poverty. But plenty of them have succeded In almost eliminating it. Quality of life in other countries has been significantly improved compared to the US. The poem wasnt meant as a matter of how we are to improve it but why we don't even bother. In the US the working class is left to rot. I grew up in a family that had generation upon generation of poverty. I have worked my whole life to improve my own circumstances and that of my children in the hope that someday they will succeed but I watch my family struggle every day to make basic ends meet. I watched my mother do so growing up and even with what I have achieved, I still struggle. This country has a way of keeping the working class broke and the rich in power. It's disgusting. What can we do about it? Improve the welfare systems so they help those on it become independent. Limit the purchase of affordable housing by corporations to keep the housing prices within affordable ranges. The list could go on for ages. The point is, our systems are broken and our current economy shows it. My main opinion is that when the working class falls, so do the corporations. There is no commerce without those that buy the products. The working class drives our economy and that's why it's failing currently. They can't afford to buy anything and they are drowning in debt.

Can’t say that you’re not right on every point you made, but here’s the question. Where is it better?
