maybe

we could still be friends

and i wouldn’t wonder what happens after

maybe you would have taken a breath

and thought about the words

leaving your mouth

could have steered everyone straight

before i turned

but i did have to put myself first.

and no one tells me where i’m going when i die.

no one buries me so deep in their own sorrows

that i fear i may not be able to pull away-

i am a shoulder to cry on

a belly ache from laughter

a listener and though my memory may fail me

i never forget those who were kind to me,

so in another life

maybe i could have forgiven you

and maybe i have

but i cannot forget

and i cannot pretend that i don’t hear your last words every time i think of hearing more.
