I'm glad you never consider
the patches of truth hidden underneath.
It makes you wonder
why it's this way.
For years, I didn't know, didn't want to.
Then you're offended when I say it to your face.
Why can't you ever figure it out?
What's really at the heart of it all?
Isn't it hard not to blame others?
And instead, just look inward?
I suppose
it takes courage.
Strong winds must sweep
across fields and roadways
to see past the illusion
we create for ourselves.
This won't fool me.
It won't change my reaction.
Instead,
it will make me think fast.
Why do we work so hard to avoid the truth?
When it's right there, hoping we'll simply accept it?
Let's include everyone in the conversation.
Instead of fabricating ill-fitting masks,
too large or too small,
too broad or too restrictive.
Then we won't drown in cruelty and guilt
living a life that's falsely assigned.
