Angel In A Swastika
A True Story

This here’s a true story of people and war
And the message compassion can send
Death and destruction is what a war’s for
But it’s not how this story will end
Since flying the Fortress was all that he knew
Aviation was top of his goals
Their mission was Bremen for him and his crew
Where they’re battered and riddled with holes
The Fortress’s pilot was Lieutenant Brown
His wounded crew turned towards home
An enemy pilot was tracking them down
These skies were the heavens he’d roam
It’s Lieutenant Stigler that headed their way
He’s a pilot with something to prove
He needs one more bomber for honor this day
When he noticed its guns didn’t move
The tail gunner’s dead and their guns are all jammed
Though the rest of the crew was alive
By shooting them down would his conscience be damned
Since that meant that they didn’t survive
He learned from his mentor, “Not all kills are good”
There’s are times when you withhold your shot
There’s honor in downing the bombers you should
But for one that’s defenseless, there’s not
He flew alongside to a hole in the plane
Saw a bloodied crew tending its own
The carnage he saw was completely insane
For this bomber that’s limping alone
“Respect” is the gift that this German will bring
“He’s our savior” the Fortress would boast
Humanity, yes, it’s a wonderful thing
As he escorted them to the coast
