And now I'm right here

A poem on being present

And now I'm right here, with nostalgia drifting into my ears

And today's comfort or tomorrow's vice stinging on my lips

And I have a thought, which aches with the weight of untold years

As the present, birdlike, precious, flickers, flutters, slips

*

It's not that complex of a thought, seems almost silly;

Whether it even matters still remains to be seen;

It's just that

forever this moment will be a part of the journey;

and from now on, this will always be a place that I've once been.

*

And one day, looking back with mirth or mournfulness, I'll still see it -

but already I look back from afar, upon a moment perched here, beside!

So whether it is to be enshrined with holy weight, or only to subtly flit

Let me live it now, admiring as it alights, and so briefly, humbly, abides.

*

It's not that complex of a thought, seems almost silly;

Whether it even matters still remains to be seen;

It's just that

forever this moment will be a part of the journey;

and from now on, this will always be a place that I've once been.

    You've so eloquently captured in words such an arresting inner moment that so often passes by without full appreciation, but you've given it the space to linger. Fantastic work, Gabriel!

    I have a little to say, other than this was exquisite

  • Oooo, that was so profound. Loved both your poem and artwork!

    Being present is one of my five goals in life. I think it is important and one that is easily forgotten with all the devices at our disposal.

    Celebrating moment to moment, being mindful of our surroundings, actually listening to the birds sing rather than consigning their songs to the peripheries of consciousness brings with it a quiet peace and contentment much like this poem. Lovely and present poesy, Gabriel!
