An Innocent Mistake

Borne without permission

Sucker punched on overload,

The triggers that sit heavy and undigested,

There to derail in a moments notice,

Intolerable with such a destructive force.

****

Every motion comes to a sudden halt,

And doubt rides the shoulders hard,

The self-talk explodes and races off on a tangent,

Leaving a breath stalled in mid sentence.

****

Hollowed pain rides the wave of life,

Questions flash before answers can be found,

The struggle becomes unbearable,

And something has to give.

****

Unknowingly in the wrong,

The shame becomes draped from head to toe,

Like a veil suffocating and inescapable,

Leaving no exit in which to run.

****

Chest constrictions warn of pending breakdown,

Frozen and incapacitated,

A mind begging for help,

But there’s none to be found.

****

Minutes can see life’s direction change,

Confidence deployed and left behind,

Terror its replacement,

As it pounds the message home.

****

Unforgivable,

Although completed in innocence,

Unknowingly wrong,

Which is no excuse.

****

Crippled by the devastation,

Regret carried on a broken back,

Until tears give way and wash the sins clean,

A new lesson learned, branded and scarred,

So that it’ll never be repeated again!

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
