An Honest Man

A poem.

By Abby SiegelPublished 6 years ago 1 min read
Diogenes Searching for an Honest Man, attributed to J. H. W. Tischbein (c. 1780)

who can know the face of a good man

the bum with the lantern sought an honest man

but is the honest man virtuous

the virtuous man honest

what is man

a featherless chicken is more honest

no one would skin a man

unless his color is all wrong

only white meat

an honest man is no good

his face is angry pinched and pale

dying but still clinging to his version of the truth

do we want an honest man?

honesty and truth are choices

as is goodness

little choose goodness

when the truth is so much juicier

like wine gums

juicy unfilling no gain but a brief moment of pleasure

eat more and more

unfulfilled

an honest man is unfulfilled

just an uncooked stuffed chicken

until he chooses to be a good one

what will you choose?

I am a woman

Diogenes never made rules for women

so what doctrine have I for virtue?
