An Everyday Escape Mechanism

Free and easy, the next best thing

Every day is an opportunity to escape,

To enrich your life through your dreams,

Pick up a book, take an adventure,

It’s truly a lot easier than it seems.

***

Choose the story you want to escape into,

Find a quiet spot to sit and relax,

Open the cover and dive right in,

Anticipate the excitement and eventual climax.

***

Don’t like reading, you prefer visual instead,

Then travel to any destination of your choosing,

Through your computer screen, as an alternative option,

Trek the mountains, fly the airways or take a turn cruising.

***

The choices are endless, travel from your armchair,

Inside a book, a TV screen or your monitor too,

Travel at your own pace, discard the need for fear,

You’re secure and safe, no matter the mode you pursue.

***

In winter, I often take a journey to the beach,

My screen shows a blue sky with fluffy clouds scattered,

A pure white sandy hot spot, with beach chair and umbrella,

All packed inside a suitcase, waiting for me, is all that mattered.

***

On the days I feel like travelling in silence,

I pick up my favourite book’s escapade,

Lay back relaxing on my bed,

And lap up the journey in which I invade.

***

When I need a break from life and it’s responsibilities,

I take every opportunity to find my escape,

Some days it’s through a good story book,

Others it’s through my computer, into a visual landscape.

***

Try it sometimes, it’s sure to work for awhile,

Especially when time for the real deal is not on your side,

Explore the next best option,

All you’ve got to choose is the manner in which you ride.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

Beautifully written. This poet hit home, because I also believe that reading is a great way to easily travel to another world. Thank you very much for writing this fantastic poem!

  • I need to try to incorporate this in my days. I am in the exact opposite place these days.

  • Some great words and ideas, love it

  • Oooo, I never thought of reading a book as silent travelling. I really like that concept. That was brilliant!

Interesting,! We are two opposing characters. I don't go anywhere near beaches in winter. I don't have outdoor fun in winter.
