Dear Congress,
I watched as we sent rockets to the moon,
then broke them down and converted them into
Rockets that launch but land with a boom,
Not exploration,
Not anymore,
There’s no room.
I sat at my window as fog covered the sky,
Wondering why, why, why,
Did we tremble and shake when our hierarchy was struck
But when people were dying we just said good luck.
I sat at my desk, I sat on the floor,
Crying sobbing as gunshots cracked, horror
Pounding blood rushed through my ears,
But you offered prayers,
Flowers and tears.
They soaked with blood, your words of disdain,
Prayers and promises that it would never happen again.
Then the next day as I still cried into your arms,
You broke your promise and blamed it on harm.
Harm to the white, broken oligarchs,
Harm to the rule-breakers on top,
Harm to your children was harm to you
But you didn’t stop it, you couldn’t,
It’s true
Because you’d have to choose,
Your world would have to crack,
Acknowledging you’re wrong,
Is to hard to unpack.
I know. I know. It’s hard to admit,
But you broke my life,
Made me want to quit.
I sat by the window questioning my life
and you sat on top, holding a knife.
King of the nation, no king of the world,
Ignoring me pleading, my thoughts a whirl.
I watched as we sent rockets to the moon,
Awe filled my heart and I wished I’d gone too,
My heart started cracking then broke into two,
When I realized it was a fluke,
We couldn’t do.
Sincerely,
Amity
