Am I But a Dream?

What do you see?

By Margaret BrennanPublished 3 years ago 1 min read

Am I But a Dream?

What is it you see when you look at me?

Do you think that I’m all that I seem?

Am I real or imagined – or a little of both?

Am I here or just in a dream?

Am I fragile and timid like a bird that can’t fly -

Or as tranquil and calm as the dove?

Am I funny and witty and pleasant to know –

Or lonely and looking for love?

Do you think I appear broken and all out of sorts –

Or maybe just full of despair?

Am I like a cold statue made of hard molded ice –

Or someone who just doesn’t care?

Do you find some confusion in the warmth of my smile –

Or can I do no more than deceive?

When you look in my eyes, tell me what do you see?

Tell me, dear, what do you believe?

Am I like a fine lady, refined to the core?

Or someone who’s fallen from grace?

Do I look like the kind who’d be awed and inspired

By naught more than a man’s handsome face?

When I look in my mirror, I don’t understand.

I look but I just cannot see.

So, tell me, my dear – and tell me the truth.

Who am I that you think you see?
