Am I a Poet Yet?

Or should I read a little more?

Am I a Poet Yet?

They say if you read enough poetry, you become a poet

You learn how lines can lead

And other ones follow

How repetition gets a point across

it gets a point across

And rhyming can make it bounce

or sometimes cause a weighty ounce

Silence can speak louder than words

--_

_==

==-

=_=

=-_

Sentences split

for dramatic effect

so dramatic

Some of the lines go on for so long, they just keep going and you think they may never end, you know what I mean?

Others

well,

they're

short

very

short

What poem would be your favorite kind?

Is it the kind where you s-k_i-p

a line

~

Do you like to be d-e-s-u-f-n-o-c

or simply just AMUSED

Do you like to be sliced to bits

by the horrid truth it speaks

Or is it love that makes your tears well up

or the type that gives the creeps

~

Do you write?

Or just read.

Have you lost your words,

are they stuck in your fingers,

unable to get out

Have you tried removing the glue?

~

Maybe

just maybe

It doesn't have to be so perfect

Make it

Who needs ru-

-les anyway?

~

I know, I know, lots of great poems have rules

Rhyming structures and numbers of lines

If you're up for a challenge

You can master all kinds

°°°°

But that's not the point

Is there a point?

▪︎▪︎▪︎

Some poems have specific themes

The point is to make you feel their dreams

Or nightmares

Depending on the mood

The temperature can make your skin crawl

It can heat your insides

Give you goosebumps

and salt seeps from your eyes

~

Poetry teaches

how poetry works

If you can read between the lines

between words

little birds twittle the same tune

as you and I do

when we write poetry

out of thin air

are you a poet yet?

or is it just me?

Though... I've been a poet

for as long as I could breathe

Simply wow, everything about this I feel I have really seen into how a poet becomes a poet and what poetry feel like for the poet. Congratulations for getting top story for November this piece really deserves this stunning and unique work.

This feels like a poem for anyone who has ever wondered if they were doing it right. It makes me think that poetry is about the journey not the destination and you’ve captured that perfectly here.

This is a brilliant, poetic celebration of the craft itself—a wonderful testament to the power and rhythm of language.

  • A brilliant poem! Thankyou for sharing and congratulations on Top Story xx

  • Well, according to Voca,l I cannot write poetry. Fortunately, according to people who read my work, I can. Love your take on poetic form, and like any art form, if you say it is poetry, then it is poetry.

I love this! It’s the most creative way I’ve heard the ‘break the rules’ advice. And I believe that all of the misgivings you refer to, are what cement your place as a poet 🥰

Tanya, I loved this, all the between-word moments, the creativity, the shout-out to rules and structure, and the prompting for the poet to find their own unique style. Congratulations on your top story❣

Yes. Well, I think that says it all. ✌🏾

This is a breath of fresh air! Tactile even in the reading of it and so easy to "cosign" to this message. Glad it was made top story 💛

-I recently got Mary Oliver's - devotions. 💌I didn't feel as though I was good enough yet. So I went digging. 📖💌 I do like the effect this gave in italic. 'it gets a point across' - 'cause a weighty ounce' love how unexpected this line was 👌🏾 📖💌 Love how you provided the silence. - yes I know what you mean. This piece is making me giggly. It's smart, informative and has good vibes. 📖💌 Confused spelt backwards 👌🏾 - I do like to be sliced to bits. I am working on one that tells a horrid truth at the moment. 📖💌 Lol I did try removing the glue. This was the laugh I needed. - 'point' oh this bit gave me goosebumps. How it's slowed down there. 📖💌 I love that the conclusion is that you already know who you are. Nothing could take that away from you. I must admit. I overthink way too much when I write. This was outstanding, Tanya 🤗❤️🖤

Ah the eternal internal struggle. I constantly ask all these questions and more. Yes. Though you are a poet in all senses of the word. I take the approach that I am because I say and think and do as a poet does lol. Love the formatting and especially loved the bit about rules and then breaking up the word. Great and very relatable piece Tanya!
