An Ekphrastic Sonnet

By D. J. ReddallPublished 3 months ago 1 min read
Albert Joseph Pénot, “La Femme Chauve-Souris,” c.1890

How readily your kind condemns my own:

“Monsters, demons, foul children of the dark!”

How quick you are to your siblings disown

Between us, is there a real difference, stark?

You find parasites loathsome and filthy

But does your life not depend on others?

Watch human beings eat and you will see

That they take life to live, first from mothers

My leather wings you find fearful and strange

My shapely bosom mesmerizes you

You strain and drool to bring my breasts in range

Like bats and leeches, drinking sustains you

Independent and free you think you are

From my vampiric life, yours is not far

Ekphrastic
