Alexander's Mermaid Sister

A Greek myth of immortality and wrath

By Rohitha LankaPublished 9 months ago 1 min read

Greek mythology is quite strange....

According to one Greek legend,

Alexander the Great had a half-sister on his father's side,

That is, on the side of King Philip

(359-336 BC).

Her name was 'Thessalonica'.

There are many versions of this folk legend,

But they all start with Alexander the Great and the water of immortality,

The elixir.

In one version,

Thessalonica deliberately drinks the water of immortality in front of her brother,

Who then curses her and

She turns into a mermaid.

In another version,

She accidentally drinks the water and

She is transformed into a mermaid.

According to the third version,

Thessalonica herself found water and brought it to Alexander, who gave it to her. Then she was transformed into a mermaid.

Regardless of the variations, the end of the myth is always the same.

That is, while

Thessalonica is

Wandering at sea,

When she sees a ship,

She approaches and asks

"Sailor, sailor, is Alexander the Great alive?"

Then if the sailor gives her a positive

Answer,

She swims happily away.

But if the answer is negative,

She sinks the ship, kills all its

Sailors, and

Causes a storm with her tears.
