Alchemy and Analogy: Silver into Gold
A Prelude to the essay Silver into Gold

Re-entry onto covered ground
As we touch down without a sound
We’re back again right at the start
The furnace burns inside my heart
x
And in hers too — or so I thought
Now come to learn, fake gold I bought
This silver tongue that speaks to snakes
Poisons the well despite the stakes
x
“Let’s live in hell, it’s not so bad,
Your soul’s your own to burn down here
And righteousness is but a fad
What sacred fruit do you hold dear?
x
You know, if you but gave the word
I’d find for you this special sweet
It sets you free, is what I’ve heard
It puts you in the driver’s seat
x
Don’t shy away, for I’m your friend
Don’t let him say that we can’t talk
We’re side by side right to the end
Entwined upon this path we walk
x
No matter where your feet may stray
Your shadow’s always got your back
Always just out of sight I stay
For subtlety I have a knack
x
Just stand by me, I’ll stand by you
And to yourself, you’ll remain true
I only want what’s best for us
That’s why just I should drive the bus”
x
This sickly sweet yet subtle song
Enchanted me for far too long
She quickly beat upon my chest
Like drums that boomed, thus we were blessed
x
But only for a day or two
Our limelight soon starts fading fast
The gold takes on a silver hue
Why can’t this magic moment last
x
The honeymoon, it can’t not end
The couple must, their garden, tend
So back we go, we must depart
This furnace yearns inside my heart
xx
Now day to day, we’re half asleep
A plodding path we walk, like sheep
Lovers who barely talk and keep
Their distance from the tears they weep
x
This loveless stare in which they’re caught
Is far from what they’ve always sought
They claim to care just as they ought
But witness what their choices wrought
x
I’m here, I speak, you hear no sound
A moonless night, a shipless port
My voice is weak, are you around?
A tuneless rite, a gripless sort
x
A hopeless plight, desolate ground
A girl with hands over her ears
I guess in silence she had found
A partner worthy of her fears
x
The willful blindness of her peers
Seemed unearned kindness for a time
But it’s been mindless all these years
To seem indifferent to the crime
x
Of leading on and kicking off
Whenever one can’t get their way
Of training all one’s friends to scoff
When from one’s story, others stray
x
I tried to move us t’wards the light
She didn’t want to flee or fight
What was a groove became a rut
The door on us, she surely shut
x
All her excuses seem so trite
She hems and haws ‘tween wrong and right
She shan’t seduce my soul once more
The web is spun, who’s keeping score?
x
Her soul is led along by fright
One movement and she will take flight
So language is my magic spell
Now listen as I ring the bell
x
The verdict’s read, as is my write
The night is black yet I am bright
We can’t go back, we played our part
The phoenix burns inside my heart
x
