Not with a sigh, but with a clarion cry that rends the passive air,

Beneath the vault where fading constellations bleed their final fire,

Rage, rage against the dimming of the luminous, the soul laid bare.

Recall the sun-scorched warrior, whose spirit knew no despair,

Whose every sinew strained towards glory, climbing ever higher,

Not with a sigh, but with a clarion cry that rends the passive air!

See the sage, whose mind, a forge, shaped wisdom beyond compare,

Who parsed the trembling stars and charted thought’s profoundest spire,

Rage, rage against the dimming of the luminous, the soul laid bare.

He knows too late, amidst the gathering shadows, stark and spare,

That blinding insight flares most fierce when fuel is nigh entire,

Not with a sigh, but with a clarion cry that rends the passive air.

Mark the wild soul, who seized each fleeting joy beyond repair,

Who danced with tempests, kissed the lightning’s fierce, electric ire,

Rage, rage against the dimming of the luminous, the soul laid bare.

He mourns the brilliant, squandered hours lost beyond recall, aware

Too late how brief the blaze, how swiftly sinks the pyre’s desire,

Not with a sigh, but with a clarion cry that rends the passive air.

And you, my father, standing on that terrible, final stair,

Where sorrow’s gulf yawns wide, a chasm of extinguishing mire,

Rage, rage against the dimming of the luminous, the soul laid bare!

Though age has draped your frame in weariness beyond compare,

Though shadows pool like ink where once ambition climbed the wire,

Not with a sigh, but with a clarion cry that rends the passive air!

Recall the vibrant force you wielded, potent, fierce, and rare,

The battles fought, the victories snatched from circumstance’s dire

Embrace! Let not that ember fade to ash, beyond repair!

Rage, rage against the dimming of the luminous, the soul laid bare!

Do not glide softly towards that slumber, tranquil and unaware,

Lulled by the siren song of ease, the whisper to retire!

Not with a sigh, but with a clarion cry that rends the passive air!

Let fierce tears scald your cheeks like molten lead, a testament, a prayer,

Against the vast indifference, the closing of the choir!

Rage, rage against the dimming of the luminous, the soul laid bare!

For life is not a meek surrender to the void’s cold lair,

Nor quiet acquiescence to the extinguisher’s desire.

It is the thunderous defiance, the unyielding, urgent dare,

The vibrant, straining No! hurled at the ultimate nightmare.

So father, at the precipice, where feeble comforts tire,

Where solemn darkness beckons with its ultimate attire,

Curse, bless me now – but with your fierce, unvanquished, blazing ire!

Rage, rage against the dimming of the luminous, the soul laid bare!

Not with a sigh, but with a clarion cry that rends the passive air!

Summary of "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night":

Dylan Thomas's powerful villanelle is a passionate plea against passive acceptance of death. Addressed primarily to his dying father, the poem urges fierce resistance ("Rage, rage") against the inevitable "dying of the light." Thomas presents archetypes – wise men, good men, wild men, and grave men – all unified by their potential for regret or unrealized potential as death approaches. He argues that regardless of one's nature or life's path, the appropriate response to mortality is not gentle acquiescence but vigorous defiance. The poem's insistent, rhythmic refrains ("Do not go gentle into that good night," "Rage, rage against the dying of the light") hammer home the central message: life, with all its intensity, struggle, and brilliance, must be fought for until the very end. It is a universal cry for the enduring power of the human spirit in the face of oblivion.
