After The Parade

See Me

By Kerry TaylorPublished 4 years ago 1 min read

You should have seen all the people today!

Cheering and chanting; smiling and laughing.

Jostling and shoving to get a better view.

Banners waving, flags unfurling, music blasting.

Rainbow coloured ribbons flew.

Can you believe all the people today?

Whistling and calling, some beating drums!

Each one was there to watch the parade

Babies and toddlers, the dad’s, and the Mum’s.

I was in the parade today.

Dressed in my finest.

Glittery and glitzy wearing colours with pride.

Twirling and swirling, skipping, and swaying

So proud today, no need to hide!

I wonder where those people go,

after the parade?

Downcast eyes, hidden glances,

whispered words

as I pass by.

They pull their children closer to them,

Turn their backs, avert their gaze.

I wonder what would the people think,

If they knew how I spend my days.

That I’m the nurse who tends their wounds,

Who comforts their loved ones in times of doom,

Who holds the hand of their dying aunt,

Speaks words of encouragement to their daughter in pain

Cradles the newborn so small and so weak,

Gives solace to those who try in vain,

To carry on.

To forge a life alongside those,

Who came to the parade.
