When I was young
I was among many children
That were abused
Most of us would walk silently
Through the school halls
To scared and embarrassed
To tell a teacher or parent
Never transparent enough
To show any signs we were being hurt
We would exert all our effort
Trying to fit in with all our friends
Trying to comprehend why this happened
And pretend that we were okay
As we grew older
Some days the memories would weigh heavily on our shoulders
Replaying over and over
Some of us would seek help and get closure
But others would isolate
Trying to fight the thoughts
That controlled their life
Until they believed there was no choice
They had to stand up and voice their pain
Or run and hide before committing suicide
So many souls gone to soon
I’ve learned that nobody is immune
To mental health issues
And until you walk in our shoes
You’ll never have a clue
How confused we really are.
