Abscond

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

By D. J. ReddallPublished about a year ago 1 min read
Inge Schuster, "Evening Fog," 2024

Don’t mistake solitude for loneliness

The former is a crisp garment, chosen

The latter a way you're obliged to dress

Solitude runs clean; lonely is frozen

Shrug past the crimson, domestic portal

The fog patiently awaits this grey time

To quaint convention, be the rebuttal

Pull off your autumn ramble like a crime

The salty speculation of strangers

Should make smiling shadows more savory

Befriend vague metropolitan dangers

Make what you think you’re doing the story

Study the thin black gestures of the trees

Startle and vanish, like a feline sneeze

Sonnet

Wow, D.J.! Deftly done but I don't feel that that really does this justice. There were so many lines but the idea of solitude being "a crisp garment" is just so well evoked. I loved the sibilance to create secrecy but to also suggest a sinister atmosphere is so well done and then, that last simile to finish? Sublime. I loved this. Great painting too, by the way. One of my favourites from the ones that you've chosen to date. This was a great way to start my day.
