A We

a poem about being a we rather than a single I

By Bethany SandersPublished 7 years ago 1 min read

I feel it

My wings spread

And I soar in the sky

Off to new lands

I’m riding the cloud

Of a new journey

Seeing the floating

Islands leading toward the sun

I realize lately my

Weakness as I see

Things with the

Light of the sun

I see that I am a we

And we is not distinct

We is a connection

The sky meets the land

The land meets the sky

The trees bow to the wind

The wind carries on

Forward not once looking back

I feel it

The connection

Either that or

I am insane

No not insane

Free

Now I shall carry on

Like the sky that gently holds the sun

Because

I am

a we

I enter a new world

as a we

a creature of utmost uncertainty

I turn a new age after new age

hoping to be something

greater than what I was before

I need to realize I am

a we

I can feel it

as I walk free

barefoot in the grass

Now as a creature of connection

I take off

in an airplane

to new countries

to find my we

because I am

a creature

an aging creature

I cannot be always

stuck

I must move forward

not for I

because I am an I

but because I am

a we
