Standing on a corner,
Cold wind blowing,
Waiting for something,
Not sure what,
A bus?
A new girl?
I see myself in the window,
Clear vision of a drunken mess,
Without the alcohol,
Without the drugs,
A mess with no reason except the mind reeling,
Away from that vision of younger days,
I smile,
A song inside my head,
Singing about a new day,
A new way,
Jesus saves!

Mind reeling,
Back and forth,
In,
Out,
Jerry is dying,
Cancer,
Out of the blue,
Doctors giving him six months.
Who?
You know Jerry,
Long face,
Short hair,
Doesn’t talk too much,
Always listening.

Jerry is dying,
Like the rest of us,
Only he’ll be gone sooner,
The rest of us gotta live,
Pick up the slack,
Work till we can’t work anymore,
Any less?
Jerry is dying,
Who could see that happen?
Jerry was supposed to live.

Darkness comes,
Time to sleep,
Those foolish people,
Sweetly, stupidly dreaming,
How quaint,
They seem,
All tucked into their beds,
Softly snoring,
Sawing those logs,
Dream dear mortals,
Dream sweetly,
Even Jerry dreams,
His last hurrah.

Jerry,
Oh Jerry,
Why my friend?
Why not me?
It should be me!
Not you.
You just got married,
Kid on the way,
I got nothing,
No home,
Nothing.
God, Jerry, don’t die,
I’ll take your place,
God, take me instead,
It’s my time!
