I saw an old friend

just the other day

How we used to talk

and laugh our cares away.

Her sad expression

looked right through me

and she turned away

like she never knew me.

Was it something I've done

or too many years?

Something she's done

or too many tears?

Who is this friend now

who I stopped on the street?

I gave her my number

but she looked at her feet.

Like I was giving her a pamphlet

that she didn't need

or she took a bite out of a fruit

and spit out the seed.

Who is this friend now

who passes me by

Is it just too late

or was our friendship a lie?

Some lose track of their friends

as the years go on

and become strangers

and the friendship is gone

But why do I feel

that friendship should last

like I can pick it back up

like no time has passed.
